HISTORY: This is the engine that in its initial form powered the De Havilland Dragon Rapide, producing a modest 200 HP . In its final form, it produced 400 HP for the past war dove and Heron airliners.

The ancestry of the Gipsy Queen can be traced back to the De Havilland Comet, the racer specifically designed for the England - Australia air race of 1934.
New engines as well as an airframe had to be designed, and the result was the Gipsy six, of 200 Hp.

Later, in 1938, new engines presumably based on the "six", were designed by Major Halford at Stag Lane, the home of De Havilland, although they had to wait untill the end of the war to see production in their turbo charged form.
